Panama City Beach Weather in March: What to Expect Week by Week

March on the Florida panhandle is not July. It’s not February in Ohio either. It’s a shoulder-season month where a good day is genuinely great, a bad day is a cold front, and the difference between Week 1 and Week 4 is real. Here’s what to expect.

The typical March day

• Afternoon highs: upper 60s to low 70s early in the month, low-to-mid 70s by the end.
• Overnight lows: low 50s early, mid-to-upper 50s later. Nights are cool. Bring a layer.
• Water: the Gulf is cool in March — swimmable on a sunny afternoon, bracing in the morning. Nobody’s staying in for hours.
• Rain: March averages a handful of rainy days. They tend to come as a front that blows through in a day, not a week of gray.
• Wind: the wildcard. A windy day makes the beach less fun and can cancel parasailing and some boat trips.

Week by week

Week 1 (Feb 27 – Mar 5)

Coolest of the four. Great beach afternoons happen, but plan on a hoodie every night and keep expectations for swimming modest. Cold fronts are most likely here.

Week 2 (Mar 6 – 12)

Warming. More reliably beachable afternoons. Still cool at night.

Week 3 (Mar 13 – 19)

The sweet spot most years: warm afternoons, tolerable nights, water that’s fine by 2 p.m. Still one front in the mix some years.

Week 4 (Mar 20 – 26)

Warmest of the season on average. The best odds of a full week of beach days.

How to plan around it

1. Book water activities (parasailing, jet skis, Shell Island) for the first good-weather day of your week, not the last. If a front comes through, you’ve already done them. Book ahead and check the operator’s weather policy.
2. Pack for both: swimsuit and sunscreen, plus a hoodie and one pair of long pants. The packing list.

4. Watch the beach flags. Wind stirs up rip currents; red and double-red days mean stay out of the water regardless of temperature.
