Shell Island: The Boat Trip Every Spring Breaker Should Take

Seven miles of undeveloped barrier island, clear water, real shells, dolphins on the ride out, and no bars. Shell Island is the one daytime trip we tell every group to take, and it’s the thing people remember when the foam party blurs together.

What it is

A natural island between St. Andrews Bay and the Gulf, reachable only by boat. No buildings, no roads, no vendors. You bring what you need and take it back.

How to get there

• Shuttle boat from St. Andrews State Park — the cheapest and simplest option; runs regularly in season.
• Dolphin tours and pontoon rentals from the marinas along Grand Lagoon, most of which stop at the island.
• Jet ski tours — guided rides that end on the island’s beach.

Whichever you choose, book ahead in Weeks 2 and 3. Boats sell out and weather cancels; the first good-weather day of your week is the day to go.

What to bring

• Water, more than you think.
• Snacks — there’s nothing to buy.
• Sunscreen and a hat. No shade.
• Water shoes for the shell beds.
• A bag for shells and a bag for trash.

What not to bring

Glass, and anything you’d be upset to lose in the sand. The island is protected; leave it as you found it.

How long

Two to three hours is the sweet spot. Half a day if you’re swimming and snorkeling the jetty side.
