Spring Break Safety in PCB: Rip Currents, Balconies, and Rideshares

Most spring break safety advice is a list of forty things. In Panama City Beach, three things account for nearly all the serious trouble. Handle these and you’re most of the way there.

1. Rip currents

The Gulf looks calm and isn’t always. Rip currents pull swimmers away from shore, and people drown every year in the panhandle trying to swim straight back against them.

• Read the flags. Green: go. Yellow: caution. Red: dangerous, stay near shore or out. Double red: the water is closed and swimming can get you fined.
• If you’re caught: don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of the pull, then angle in. Float and wave if you’re tired.
• Don’t swim drunk, and don’t swim alone. Especially at night.

2. Balconies

Climbing between balconies, sitting on railings, and the things that happen on balconies after midnight are the second-leading source of serious injury here. Every property has a no-climbing rule, the city takes it seriously, and gravity takes it more seriously than either. Keep the party inside the railing.

3. Getting home

Late-night walks and rideshares are where the smaller problems pile up: separated groups, lost phones, wrong cars.

• Set a meeting point before you go in. Foam parties eat groups.
• Share your location with your group for the night.
• Verify the plate before you get in the rideshare. Walk a block from the crowd to request it.
• Battery pack. Your phone is your ticket, your ride, and your map.
• Nobody walks home alone. Nobody.

The everyday stuff

• Water between drinks. Sunburn and dehydration wreck more spring breaks than anything on this page.
• Know your address. Write the condo address in your phone notes; “the tall one near Fred’s” doesn’t help a driver.
• Lock the condo. Spring break units get walked into.
• Know where the nearest urgent care is before you need it.

Where to get help

911 for emergencies. Beach patrol and lifeguards along the main stretch during the season. The venues on the Club Card calendar have staff who deal with this all week; ask them. And read the rules so the only surprise of your week is how good it was.
