Spring Break Group Chat Rules: Coordinating 10 People in PCB

A spring break group of ten is a small organization with no manager. The group chat is the only infrastructure. Here are the rules that work, learned the hard way.

Before the trip

1. One chat, one topic. Trip logistics only. The memes go somewhere else.
2. Pin the essentials: dates, condo address, booking confirmation, the payment ledger, the rules.
3. Deadlines are deadlines. Deposit by X date or you’re not on the trip. The money post.
4. Assign jobs: booker, treasurer, grocery lead, activity booker, the person who owns the party card discount code.

During the trip

1. Morning message. One person posts the day’s plan by 11: beach or activity, day party or not, tonight’s theme, meeting time.
2. Location sharing on for the night, off in the morning if people want.
3. The meeting point rule. Every night has a physical meeting point outside the venue. Foam eats groups.
4. Nobody’s the last to know. If plans change, it goes in the chat, not in a side text.
5. “Home” means a message. Everyone posts one word when they’re back. The last one in checks the door.

The unwritten rules

• Nobody is required to go out every night. The person who stays in on Wednesday is the person who’s alive on Friday.
• No voting on where to eat after 9 p.m. The day-plan person decides.
• Don’t post the condo address anywhere public.
• The group tolerates one flaky person. Don’t be the second.
